ABOUT

Samuel Mutter is a composer from Long Island, NY, currently attending Bard College and Conservatory as a fourth-year music composition student. Influences on his music include a wide range of classical, folk, rock, pop, and jazz resulting in a musical style just as broad. His musical interests also include music of different cultures from around the world, and this often affects his writing.

At a young age Samuel has been fortunate enough to have his music performed by large ensembles, chamber ensembles, and soloists. Recent collaborations include the “Ink Art and New Music” project created by Bard College Conservatory, the University of Hong Kong, and the M+ Museum (Hong Kong) for which his piece “Nocturnal Scars” was composed for a combination of Chinese and Western instruments. “Nocturnal Scars” was premiered both at Bard College (NY) and in Hong Kong in 2022. Other recent collaborations have included musicians at Yellow Barn’s Young Artist Program where “Emerald Dust” and “-whelmed” were premiered. He has also been commissioned to write music for high school wind band and for film.

Additionally, Sam has worked extensively in collaboration with choreographers and dancers and has composed and performed music for several dance works.

As a musician Samuel performs regularly on piano, tin whistle, and trumpet in various settings including improvisations, pop, and folk music. He is a member of a student improvisation ensemble called "Boy Band" which performs regularly at Bard College.

Sam has studied composition with Alan Hankers, George Tsontakis, Joan Tower, Mark Andre, and currently studies with Jessie Montgomery. He is pursuing a BM in Music Composition and a BA in History.
